What all three of these games have in common is that they are all amazing to play with pals, were all originally created as stand out entries in various game jams and are all made by awesome and creative independent developers!
Starwhal
This game is quite near and dear to my heart as it's made by some really good friends of mine from Breakfall. The game is super unique and weird and has you and up to three friends joust it out as flying space narwhals. The WiiU version even includes a five player mode in which the four Starwhal players team up against the player with the gamepad controlling the menacing Blastopus! The game is really simple to pickup and play making it perfect to put in the hands of experienced gamers and total noobs alike.
Toto Temple Deluxe
A single screen, competitive platformer that's all about getting the goat. I was not familiar with the original Toto Temple from Juicy Beast before meeting some of the creators at last winter's Ottawa International Game Conference. They gave an awesome talk about their approach to creating playable menus which function both as a way to navigate the set up screens but also teach you how to play as you do it! The talk was adapted from an amazing blog post which you can find here.
Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes
Finally, we have an offering by Steel Crate Games, an awesome bunch of Ottawa devs which has been making waves wherever it passes! Keep Talking is a game about diffusing a bomb. The hook, is that, as the person defusing the bomb, you have no idea how to do it and have to rely on verbal instructions from the player or players looking through the manual. It's a totally hilarious, nail biting and raucous lesson in good communication. Though it was originally conceived as a VR game, it was recently released on Steam and is playable using a regular computer screen as well.
Can confirm- Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes is a fantastic game!!
